Despite shortfalls in state funding to community colleges, Illinois Valley Community College still approved a balanced budget for its operating costs for the 2008-2009 school year.
The IVCC Board of Trustees voted 5-0 Wednesday to approve the budget as presented last month. Trustees Deborah Sweeden and Thomas Setchell were absent.
The $33 million budget includes a loss of $167,000 in revenue due to the elimination of several grants in the state budgeting process. IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said the budget had included the option of adding four new staff positions. Given the loss of funding, the option of moving ahead with all four positions will be placed on hold. The college also will review contracts for services, supplies and conference and meeting expenses as places to make further cuts.
"We will adjust," Coorcoran said. "We will not go over what we have to spend, just like you wouldn't go over what you have in your checking account."
The positions being considered, but which had not yet been approved by the board, were moving the athletic director from a part-time to full-time position and appointing an assessment center coordinator, a peer tutoring-writing center coordinator and a training specialist in the business training center.
